20 Writing Do's and Don'ts

I've been writing for a long time, and still have a thirst for new tips and ways to improve my writing.

Here are 20 writing do's and don'ts every writer should know:

1.  Put thought into your punctuation, notably the use of commas and periods.  Your thoughts flow through the use of these two punctuation marks, put them in the wrong place and they can make your text confusing, even when the words are clear.

2.  Always create and edit separately, because they're two different processes, which use different parts of the brain.  Doing both at once will confuse you.  Leave the job of editing til last.

How to Use a Dictionary and Thesaurus When You Write

If you're looking for simple tools to help with your writing, look no further than a dictionary and thesaurus.  The most basic and cheapest of tools, each of these books will help improve your grammar and punctuation in no time!

What is a Dictionary

An assembly of words in one or more particular languages.  Listed alphabetically, providing the meanings, definitions, etymologies, and pronunciations of words.

A Brief History of the Dictionary

There is much deliberation as to what forms the basis of the first dictionary.  Archaeologists have found bilingual words lists from the Akkadian Empire, located in Modern Syria of 2300 BCE.

Arabic and Chinese dictionaries have also been found.  Robert Cawdrey, a school teacher called a table alphabetical in 1604, but that was thought to be not very accurate.  The most trusted modern English language dictionary was Samuel Johnson's, and was around for 150 years up to 1755.  Then came the Oxford English Dictionary.

Verbs can accurately tell you at what time something has taken place or when something existed or come to pass.  These are performed by three main tenses: past, present and the future.

By incorporating different tense forms in your sentences you can give the reader an indication when something has occurred or existed in time.

It takes time to grasp all of the tenses, but the simple tenses are pretty easy to understand.  Once you comprehend how to use progressive, perfect, and perfect-progressive forms you can start to generate a frame of reference for your own writing.

Why Grammar is So Important

Grammar is the foundation of communication. Erroneous grammar, like any badly setup internet connection, can affect the accuracy of any intended communication.

Meanings can be easily be buried and concealed in mistakes, a number of these errors can be found with sentence structure, punctuation, subject/verb tense, spelling, and many other workings of grammar and speech.

You can change the thought and intent of a sentence with misplaced grammar turning it into something quite disturbing for example: "Let's eat grandma" or "Let's eat, grandma".

When grammar is used properly, content becomes more coherent, and a lot more compelling. A story can become muddled, by too many sentence reworkings. Leaving the reader scratching their head.

Grammar in the Real World

Every facet of life, be it word, education, social life and job opportunity requires the use of grammar. This becomes even more evident when you start a family of your own, and your children start learning their grammatical patterns from you.

This can carry through and be detrimental to the next generation if they learn incorrectly.

How to Polish Your Punctuation

Blog post updated 07/07/2019.

Even though punctuation can appear unimportant, it actually holds a greater role than you think in the grand scheme of  things.  A misplaced full stop, or comma can bring a totally different meaning to a sentence, and often leave people confused as to what was originally being communicated.

Frequently Used Punctuation Marks

Starting with some of the most used punctuation marks in the English language, you'll understand how easy it is to misplace a punctuation mark, and change the sounding of a sentence.

Conveying the right punctuation can add emotion, and feeling, in fiction, giving your reader a sense of what the character is going through.  With a greater variety of punctuation you can bring mood, and effect that creates pace, and reflects your story.

Your use of punctuation must be constant throughout your writing giving your reader transparency and acknowledgement.
