Driving Your Writing Business With Content Marketing

If you want to make writing your business you need to think about how you're going to establish multiple streams of income through content marketing.

The most obvious form of content marketing is writing books.  What other avenues are there to expand your income stream as a writer?

Thinking that writing books as your primary income stream is a dangerous way to think.

Having a single income stream can be a rocky path to choose, especially in the times we're living in today.

The more you expand your income stream the better off you'll be.  Writing opens up so many different doors, and even new projects you can build on to increase how much you earn.

Here's a quick list of income streams, which we're going to look at more detailed later on:

1. Consulting

Offer people a service such as consulting.

2. Affiliate Income

Selling other people's products on your blog.

3. Product Sales

Selling your own books, courses, or any other physical merchandise on your blog.

4. Advertising and Sponsorship

Using companies that will pay you directly for access to your audience.

5. Freelance Writing

Writing content for other people or companies.

How to Use Content Marketing in Your Writing Business

What is Content Marketing?

Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.

How Do You Attract Customers?

Once you have one book published you'll start to notice a change in traffic to your website, which means the more you publish the more you'll be seen.  Amazon is the world's biggest online store, so it only makes sense this particular platform will have the largest audience online.  If you don't have a shelf of books written already you may need to turn your attention to other means to attract customers, such as paid advertising.

A lot of businesses prefer paid advertising, but it can be really expensive, which is why you need to make sure you're going to make money from it before you jump in.

Which is why writer's use their own writing platform to gain new readers and customers to their products.  This is usually done through subscription, email list, blogging or podcast.

Quality Content is the Name of the Game

When you start a website you should be aiming your blog at a specific market or niche, and every article you write should entertain, inspire or educate your audience.

You can do this by writing blog posts, audio clips, podcasts, video or images.

It should never be random.  But always aimed directly at your readers.

A lot of people think blogging is about writing about anything and everything.  That doesn't work.  Before you start a blog you need to think about the audience you want to attract to your blog.  There are thousands of subjects to choose from.

Your main aim is to attract people to your website so that they'll buy your books, click on your affiliate links, and other products you may be selling.  Gradually over time people will begin to see you as an authority in your subject and trust you enough to buy your books, products and services.

  • Are you enticing your subscribers with something of value?
  • Do you have a shop or page for your books?

Benefits of Having Your Own Platform

Building your authority and brand online is key to your success as a writer.  You may open up other doors through your writing, bringing you new opportunities.

Be Consistent

When you start a blog you soon begin to realise how similar blogging is to writing articles for a magazine or newspaper.  Both magazines and newspapers produce consistent content regularly, and that's what you need to do as a writer.  Without that content your blog and business are dead.

It May Even Change Your Life

You'll read all kinds of stories from people online telling you how much writing has changed their work and personal life.  Along with the freedom it brings.

For me it started out as therapy, and something to keep my mind busy.  Now I'm writing as many books as I can, on as many different subjects as I can.

Writing can change your life too.

Blogging Gives You a Voice

Blogging can be just the start of your writing journey.  As a content writer you have the power to do whatever you want to with the words you produce.

You might want to turn your content into:

  • a book
  • a course
  • podcast
  • audiobook

I chose to turn my words into books, think of what you can achieve.
