Consistency Plus Persistence Equals a Successful Writer

I started my blog in 2015 and have weathered the storm of change on the internet ever since.  Reading hundreds of articles about what makes a successful writer.

And this is what I've discovered.

Persistence

Which is basically maintaining a permanent state of "I will be successful rain or shine" or  Slow and steady wins the race, Aesop.

A proverb whose origins lie with Aesop, a Greek storyteller.  Based on his fable of "The Tortoise and the hare".  In the story, the hare makes fun of the tortoise for being slow, believing there's no way he could possibly lose to the slow tortoise.  You soon discover that the hare quickly builds a strong lead, and in his mocking of the tortoise decides to take a nap.  But pretty quickly the tortoise catches up with the napping hare, and is moments away from the finishing line.  But to the hare's horror, he's too late, the tortoise has crossed the finish line, and wins the race.

It was the tortoise's persistence that won the race, and the hare's complacency that lost it.

Every story of success I've read, every writer has stuck to their plan, some have been more successful than others, but the outcome is always the same.  "Stick with it"!

Consistency

This simply means being unchanging and constant in your approach, and sticking to your plan.

All that means is if you're advertising you begin by testing things out, then work out how much you can afford to spend on your advertising.  Choosing either the short term advertising or long term advertising route.  Whichever suits you, don't worry everyone has a different approach to advertising and knowing what works best.

It's the same principle with your writing.  You start writing and producing books as much as you can.  Figuring out if you want to brand your book covers, or whether you want to make each book cover different.

You write and write as much as you can, improving along the way, and you see your audience gradually building.  All of these things are simple things that make a lot of sense in the long term.

Time

Some people get there faster than others.  The point is, once you start making money, even if it's just a few pounds here and there, and start seeing the money come in, that you're on the right track.  You can tweak things a little, but not too much, if you need to.  Continuing with your consistency and persistency.

I hope this blog post is helpful, as simple as it is.   Remember, writing isn't a get rich quick scheme.  Especially if you want to make a living out of it.

Anyway, happy writing!
