Today we're going to take a look at some really early texts that have been located that were once thought to be bound or found in tablet form.
1. Etruscan Gold Book
Regarded as one of the oldest books in the world, it has been dated back to 600 BCE. Consists of 6 24 carat gold sheets that are bound together. With illustrations depicting soldiers, a mermaid and a man on a horse.
It was uncovered during a dig along the Strouma River in Bulgaria.
2. Sinai Bible (Codex Sinaiticus)
One of the oldest known manuscripts belonging to the Bible, and largely intact. It is a handwritten copy of the Bible in Greek text from the Septuagint. This was written by four scribes thought to be during the 4th century.
An excellent biblical text for Bible believers, even though parts of the Old Testament are missing. This was discovered in Sinai, Egypt, 1844.
3. Pyrgi Gold Tablets
An excavation in Pyrgi, Italy, 1964 led to the discovery of the Pyrgi Gold Tablets. These are thought to date back to 500 BCE. Even though they weren't bound together they did have holes around the border that suggested that a binding may have once taken place on the tablets.
A remarkable find because they're written in two different languages, ancient Etruscan, and the third tablet is written in Phoenician.
4. Nag Hammadi Library
A collection of thirteen codices that were found buried in a sealed jar in 1945 by a farmer called Muhammed al-Samman, in the Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi. The codices consist of Gnostic treatises. Believed to date back somewhere between the 3rd and 4th century.
5. Garima Gospels
Two gospel books from the Abba Garima Monastery in Ethiopia are believed to date back to the 11th century.
6. St. Cuthbert Gospel
One of the oldest surviving European books is thought to date back to the 7th century. It is a copy of St. John's gospel and was placed in St. Cuthbert's coffin after his death in 687.
7. Book of Kells
Book of Kells is a manuscript dating back to about 800 A.D. thought to be the Gospel of Columba.
8. Gutenberg Bible
One of the first books to ever be mass produced by Johannes Gutenberg and his printing press around 1450-1455.
