The Writers Guide to Keeping a Journal

Journaling, a pastime that has many therapeutic effects, but also helps create moments of mindfulness.  Writers can sit down, slow down and reflect on the amazing sense of undisturbed control they can have through writing a journal.

Another in-thing among adults, was adult colouring books, enabling many people to recapture their sense of self.

By slowing down, we can begin the process of reflection on our busy lives, helping reduce stress, and igniting the possibilities for creative writing.  In a fast paced world, it has become harder for people to really express themselves,  but by starting a daily journal they have the opportunity to light up their creativity.

How to Start Your Journal

1. Pick Your Journaling Medium

Finding the right medium to start journaling through may take you a little time.

The most common form of journaling is writing by hand.  All you need to do is find the right size journal and a pen you're comfortable with, and just write.

Typewriter's are another great way of slowing down the process of writing.  Believe it or not, this particular medium takes away all of the distractions of a laptop or PC.

The first thing a writer does when sitting down to their laptop is to open up their email, take a look at what's happening on social media, and that's even before they begin to write.  In an instant an hour has passed.

Using a typewriter banishes all of those distractions, leaving the writer a distraction-free period of peace and serenity.

Not everyone can write comfortably that way, if your laptop does it for you, use it.

2. Select Your Technique

Before you choose your journaling style, ask yourself, who are you writing for?

Most people write journals for themselves, making it a more intimate style of writing.  For others this can seem more challenging.  Some people find it easier to write to a family member.  Either way the writer still captures the moment with their flow and creativity.

Don't feel cornered by any particular style, this can be changed at any point.

It may start out as a simple series of entries, or reflections written to yourself, later on these ca be made into short stories.  Your journal writing style can be creative, poetic or reflective, it all depends on what suits you.

3. 3 Tips to Jump-Start Your Journaling

How do I get started?  Jump-start your journaling with these 3 simple tips:

Tip 1:

Define what your journaling inspiration was, and what you hope to gain by writing your journal.

Tip 2:

Did your thoughts about journaling go towards more of a short story?  Were you thinking along the lines of writing a piece of poetry?  Either way write about your life's experience so far.

Tip 3:

Do you have a personal story to tell?  May be something interesting in your family's genealogy?  Is their a reason you want to write about your family ancestry?

4.  Can You Delve Deeper into What You've Written?

Do you feel that you could have any added extra details, just because you wanted to get all of your thoughts out?  Do your entries need more information?  Take a look through and see if you can add any more information that may give your thoughts more depth.

5.  How to Keep Yourself Motivated When You're Journaling

Brainstorming is a great way to motivate yourself to keep a journal, it also helps to improve your writing.

Taking the time out to reflect on your life will give you a greater sense of self, and more confidence to write about what you really want.
